A Work-In-Progress Exhibition by Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts Diploma in Fine Arts (Western Painting) Graduates

When I walked up the flight of stairs into the gallery space, I was expecting to see a space filled with paintings in a very conducive environment.

But as much as it was pretty much the opposite of what I had expected, I was greeted by many different works of the artists featured, the eight fine arts graduating students who are majoring in western painting from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts.

As stuffy and stale the air was in the gallery, two of the works still screamed attention when I stepped in. One was from Priscilia Kheng and the other from Alexandra Sng.

Kheng’s work was all about dried cuttlefish and to me; I found it amazing someone would actually choose something so out of the box to be the subject, let alone to paint it. Her eye for detail is indeed sharp and the colours she used brought the whole painting to life, it was like a photograph being mounted on canvas. Her smaller works which were being displayed all along the corridors to welcome visitors were pretty much her colour tests and they were indeed pretty too. As according to her artist statement where she mentioned that she would want to bring something that it classified as ‘an ordinary subject to an art piece worthy of attention’, I feel that she has done a great job. In my opinion, I am actually somewhat curious what she is going to do next and what would be her next subject that she would bring to life!

As for Sng’s work, it was mostly about human anatomy and that is exactly why I found it interesting. I liked how detailed each human form is being drawn and how the way they are being composed. Though keeping as much details as she could using only pen as her medium, I feel that they are very well drawn in a pretty simplified way, in the sense that not the entire human body is there but they were cropped and repeated in a very presentable way. To be honest, the first impression of her works was not as pleasant as Kheng’s. But instead, it screamed attention to me in a different way, like in a questionable and gory way.

In my opinion, though these two mentioned artists’ works were notable, the other six were just as good in their own ways.

Eleanor Lim’s lightly mono-coloured paintings of feet are interesting in a very simplified manner. Lim’s idea is strong but I thought having a variety of subjects would be good.

As for Terry Wee’s impasto-style-inspired painting, it is abstract the fact that he was going for a ‘momentarily’ feel, I thought it was rather interesting. His eye for the relationship between colours is really interesting and as the painting is large in scale, it really sets you in the right mood.

I always thought if an artist paints someone they look up to, is a form of respect. Clearly, to Nurshirah Adnan, she proved me right. Her painting of her grandmother is very honest and personal. It does evoke that sense of respect, from the way I look at the work.

Roslind Chua’s painting of a mask and a girl was just as good as Kheng’s, except for the fact that it was not complete. I am really interested to see what the fully completed painting would look like.

As for Gracia Phang’s dresses made of various different interesting materials such as flowers, stems, and even thumb tacks were one of the highlights of the exhibition. Personally, I feel that at a painting exhibition with sculptures of dresses, it only enhances on the concept behind Phang’s works. Her story is strong and her works are her best evidence.

However, Tiffany Tay’s take on the question of ‘do children these days have a childhood’ was all about paintings of the portraits of the children were not as flattering as the rest of the works being exhibited, in my most honest opinion. Though I do like her choice of colours, I feel that it was not exactly an honest piece of work for she took the pictures of the children and have painted them with her own interpretation of the kid’s childhood. I just thought perhaps it would have been more effective if she had painted her own childhood to compare with the childhood of children now.

On the whole, I feel that the show was really interesting as we all got to see a preview of the works of these aspiring artists before their graduation. Talk about artists at work!

Biography

Daniel Loo graduated from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts with a Diploma in Fine Arts, majoring in Printmaking in 2009. His works are based primarily on personal experiences and definitions of moods and emotions. He is heavily influenced by Pop, both in art and music.

He has exhibited in various group exhibitions and is currently serving his National Service.

I am one who wants to make ‘fun’ art. I want to share my bubbly and cheerful personality through my artworks and would love my audiences to enjoy looking at them as much as I have enjoyed making and creating them. I love bright and vibrant colours and I love the traditional printmaking techniques such as paper cutting and silkscreen printing.

I am inspired by Pop Art, from Andy Warhol to Lady Gaga and especially its use of flat and solid colours. At the same time, I do also enjoy the works of painter Julian Opie. I take references from Australian artist, Ryan McGuinness, for the patterns produced with my papercuts.
